Easy Hanging Lights - Rustic Country Hanging Lamps

Having an outdoor party? Would you like some whimsical outdoor candle lights using materials that you probably already have on hand?

All you need are 3 or 4 canning jars - any size - clear or the old blue tinted ones, some stripped electrical wire or wire coat hangers, a cordless drill, a pair of pliars, some 1/2 inch screws and some tea lights. You can even use empty pickle or mayonnaise jars if you don't have canning jars.

If you are using coat hangers for your wire, use the pliars to unwind the coat hangers and stretch the wire out semi-straight. Next, using the pliars and your hands, wind the wire nearby the neck of the jar at least once and give the wire a wee twist nearby itself at the end to gather it nearby the neck of the jar. Repeat this for each jar that you have. Next, using your pliars, wind the other end of the wire tightly nearby the screw once. Then using your drill (or a screwdriver) insert the screw into an overhead rafter of your porch - I hung these lights above my outdoor patio table. You need to rehearsal caution and not insert screws that are long sufficient that they will go straight through the porch roof and cause a leak or cause other damage...also keep in mind that you will be using candles so make sure your wire is long sufficient so that the rising heat from the candle won't catch anything on fire. Once the lights are secured, bend the wire between the ceiling or beam in a twisted or zigzag pattern - or if you prefer straighten it - and bend the wire at the neck of the jar so that the jar is hanging level.

Then drop a tea light (use the ones that are in the wee metal containers) into each jar and light the tea lights using a long candle lighter to avoid burns. If you prefer you can paint stars, flowers or other designs on the surface of the jars...I used the old blue-ish aged Ball jars and they add a rustic old-fashioned charm to my back porch and give a nice light above the table. I have four of them hanging in a group at assorted lengths.

An extra jar with fresh cut flowers underneath will add just the right touch.
